Cant say i have seen anything about the VQ crank being specially coated, it could be Nitrided but most forms wont preclude grinding, yes a decent engineering company that is used to crank grinding will grind the journal to the tolerances for the manufactured oversize bearing, which means it will fit and have the correct crush tolerance when fitted without ever having to use plastiguage or similar.

If he did the crank and rock would be junk after a couple rotations. You feed just enough rock into the journal to let it whittle off the roughness and damage.

I know a guy who is running a small block 400 chevy crank (w lots of machine work) in a mopar X block w 4.1 bore and W5 heads (he works at the machine shop so all work and hrs are only time. He CLAIMS the chevy cranks are lighter, stronger, with many more rods and pistons to choose from. I believe the 400 is a 3.75 stroke.
